You're a young person living far from home in a culture with very different standards. The most powerful person in the land offers you luxury food and drink that conflicts with your beliefs. Everyone else is happily accepting. What do you do?
Daniel 1:8-15
Respectfully propose a test: let me follow my standards for 10 days and compare the results — Daniel's approach is brilliant: he didn't compromise his standards, but he also wasn't rude or confrontational. He respectfully proposed a test — 'Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days' — trusting God to vindicate his obedience. After ten days, he and his friends looked healthier than everyone else. Sometimes the wisest thing isn't to fight or to give in, but to find a faithful, creative solution.
Daniel 3:17-18
Daniel 3:17-18
Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. — These verses contain one of the boldest faith declarations in all of scripture. Three young men standing before the most powerful ruler on earth, facing certain death by fire, and their response is essentially: 'God CAN save us. But even if He doesn't — we still won't worship your idol.' This is what unconditional faith looks like.
