Family discussion questions

  1. What's the scariest thing you've ever done that you're glad you did? Did you feel God's presence in that moment?
  2. Joshua spent years as Moses's assistant before becoming a leader. How does faithful service in smaller roles prepare you for bigger ones?
  3. When have you felt overwhelmed by a new responsibility? How did trusting God help you move forward?
  4. What's a challenge you're facing right now where you need to hear 'the Lord thy God is with thee'?
  5. Why do you think God 'commands' courage rather than just suggesting it? What does that tell you about how He sees you?
  6. Why do you think God required the priests to step into the water first? What does that teach about the relationship between faith and miracles?
  7. When have you had to 'get your feet wet' before God showed you the way forward?
  8. Why do you think God repeated 'be strong and of a good courage' three times? When have you needed to hear an encouraging message more than once?

Sample questions from this week's game

You've just been given a huge new responsibility — like Joshua being asked to lead all of Israel after Moses died. You feel overwhelmed and inadequate. According to Joshua 1:9, what should you do?

Joshua 1:9

Show answer

Be strong and courageous because God is with you wherever you go — God didn't tell Joshua to be courageous because Joshua was awesome — He told him to be courageous because GOD was with him. The source of our courage isn't our own talent or experience; it's the presence and power of God walking beside us.

Joshua 1:9

Joshua 1:9

Show answer

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. — Joshua 1:9 is one of the most beloved courage verses in all of scripture. Notice that God 'commanded' courage — it's not optional! And the reason for courage isn't our own strength but God's constant, unwavering presence wherever we go.
